Friday Favorites: The Wrestling Gold Edition!

Every Friday morning, I write about five of my favorite pro wrestling-specific things or happenings. Enjoy!

1. CM Punk Returns For Gold!

I wrote about this on Tuesday. I liked the way WWE orchestrated Punk’s return in Chicago.

Yes, it came at the expense of Sami Zayn’s Undisputed WWE title run. But I didn’t mind it, given the available options. They positioned themselves in a corner by getting to Raw, but what they did on Raw was effective.

It also sets up the second-biggest match WWE has available in Punk vs. Cody Rhodes.

2. AEW World Title Picture Gold!

I also wrote about this. Forgive me, I’m new here, so we may repeat a few things.

Kenny Omega winning wasn’t my favorite thing of the week (the 80s wrestling fan in me wanted heel champion MJF vs. hometown babyface Will Ospreay in Wembley), but the AEW world title scene is one of my favorite things in wrestling.

It has been crowded and unpredictable since MJF won the gold at Worlds End, which is a good combination.

3. Nattie vs. Kendal Grey Was Gold!

Speaking of effective booking, it was smart for Shawn Michaels and company to put someone like Nattie in the ring with the new NXT Women’s Champion.

The outcome might have been predictable, but they got after it and created a great match. Dave Meltzer gave it four-and-a-half stars in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Star ratings are what they are, but what a tremendous start for Grey’s title reign.

4. Thekla Is Gold!

Willow Nightingale’s surprise return creates a bit more doubt on the AEW Women’s World title match at All In.

But should Willow defeat Thekla at AEW Redemption to set up another match with Mercedes Mone, Tony Khan has to find something big for The Toxic Spider.

Her commentary during the Casino Gauntlet Match was hilarious, and she has created one of my favorite personas in wrestling right now.

5. Wrestling Gold!

I have a backlog of old wrestling DVDs that I keep telling myself I’m going to watch (if only I could stop scrolling!).

One of them is the decades-old Wrestling Gold five-disk set starring Dave Meltzer and Jim Cornette. From what I understand, they do alternate commentary on old wrestling matches.

People have strong opinions on both in the current wrestling landscape, but man does this sound entertaining.

What are some pro wrestling favorites on your mind this week? Thanks for reading!
