In this WWF Superstars 2/12/94 review, Randy Savage squares off with Rick Martel, Owen Hart has some choice words for Bret Hart, and much more.
Let’s jump in.
- Show: WWF Superstars
- Date: February 12, 1994
RINGSIDE: Vince McMahon and Stan Lane hype the action.
Crush (w/Mr. Fuji) vs. Jay Stryker
Is it gonna be Jay Striker against Randy Savage at WrestleMania X instead? Let’s see! Turns out, it won’t be, as Striker hits a flurry of offense early and then gets his ass beat by Crush. It’s Crush locking in the vice grip on Striker’s head for the win.
CONTROL ROOM: WWF Update with Gorilla Monsoon, brought to you by the WWF DENIM JACKET. I clearly missed out on those. Gorilla is fantastic here playing up the story behind Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart at WrestleMania X. He rails on Owen’s selfishness and highlights Bret’s title accomplishments, including winning the WWF title in Saskatoon. This is a great video package to promote Bret.
VIDEO: Owen responds to Bret’s accomplishments and ponders what it’ll mean for him when he beats Bret at WrestleMania.
Bam Bam Bigelow (w/Luna Vachon) vs. Brad Anderson
Vince hypes some big WrestleMania announcements coming up, then we get an inset promo from Bam Bam and Luna discussing their plans for Valentine’s Day. What’s not to love? Bam Bam squashes Anderson with the Bam Bam Sault for the victory.
RINGSIDE: After the match, Bam Bam shows Luna his finisher on the video screen, which he renames the Luna Sault. True love.
VIDEO: Jim Ross replays an interview with Bret. He opens up on the emotions of facing Owen at WrestleMania and having to balance that with facing either Lex Luger or Yokozuna after that.
VIDEO: Hype for Owen vs. Marty Jannetty on next week’s Superstars.
The Bushwhackers vs. Reno Riggins and Barry Horowitz
Something tells me the whole licking audience members gimmick would not work in the modern era. We saw the jobber team of Riggins and Horowitz get beaten on Monday Night Raw, and that happens again this one. Luke and Butch hit the Battering Ram for the win.
VIDEO: A vignette for Alundra Blayze, where she rides motorcycles and does squats. Vince has to love it.
Jason Voltaire vs. Ludvig Borga
I don’t like Voltaire’s chances in this match. Honestly, I don’t remember much from Borga’s run in the WWF. He met Vince’s desire for a big power dude, but other than that, that extra something wasn’t there. Borga showcases his strength and racks Voltaire for the victory.
VIDEO: Replay of Randy Savage attacking Crush on WWF Mania.
VIDEO: WrestleMania X report with Todd Pettengill. He announces a new match for the show, and it’s Razor Ramon vs. Shawn Michaels in a Ladder Match for the Intercontinental title. We get promos from Shawn and Razor hyping the match. Then Pettengill announces Men on a Mission vs. The Quebecers for the Tag Team titles, and Alundra Blayze vs. Debbie Combs for the Women’s title.
VIDEO: Promotion for WWF RAGE IN THE CAGE on Sega. Loved all those games.
Rick Martel vs. Randy Savage
Vince is THRILLED at Little Richard being announced for WrestleMania X. This feels like a match straight out of 1988, but I’m all for it. Martel’s showmanship was awesome, and he really plays it up in this match. It’s all about Savage taking the fight to Martel, but Martel continuing to retreat.
Martel eventually gains the advantage and works over Savage, with some nice back and forth as Savage gets a near fall. Vince’s commentary is so over the top that it’s hilarious. Savage hits the flying elbow to earn the win. This was a fun match. (Recommended)
VIDEO: JR replays an interview with The Quebecers and Johnny Polo. They laugh about facing Mo and Mabel at WrestleMania.
VIDEO: Paul Bearer hypes the return of The Funeral Parlor next week, with Yokozuna as the special guest.
BLAKE’S TAKE ON WWF SUPERSTARS 2/12/94
Recommended Matches: Rick Martel vs. Randy Savage
Overall Rating: 6.0/10
Thoughts: A pretty enjoyable edition of Superstars. The Martel/Savage match was good stuff, and I love all the vignettes to get fans invested in storylines. As usual, the Bret and Owen storyline continues to be awesome.
